GpgOL support for shared mailbox in an enterprise environment

Hello,

I need some help regarding GpgOL and shared mailboxes in Outlook.

We are working in an enterprise/corporate environment. After installing the GpgOL plugin through the manifest, the add-in appears to be available only for the user’s personal mailbox. However, the same user also has access to a shared mailbox, and the plugin does not seem to be available or usable there.

I have read in the Microsoft documentation that some Outlook add-ins may not work with shared mailboxes, depending on their configuration and supported features.

I would like to understand whether GpgOL supports shared mailboxes and, if so, how it can be enabled for them.

Is there any specific configuration required to make GpgOL work with a shared mailbox, or is this scenario currently not supported?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello @battuto, welcome to the forum.

From your mentioning of a manifest I deduce that you are referring to the GpgOL/Web addin for the “New” Outlook, correct? And you have Gpg4win 5.0.2 installed?

Hello, thank you for the welcome.

Yes, correct. I am referring to the GpgOL/Web add-in for the “New” Outlook, and I have Gpg4win 5.0.2 installed.

I also used the gpgol-client.exe file to perform the pairing. During the pairing process, there was no need to enter the code manually.

In addition, a Microsoft admin account was required to enable the login.

Hi,

direct access to shared mailboxes is not currently supported in GpgOL/web. It is a feature that we hope to add, but some more work will be needed on our side.

Something GpgOL/web already supports is shared mail folders, i.e. reading mails in a folder that has been shared with your account (right click on a mail folder, select “Sharing and permissions”). Further - as an admittedly clumsy workaround - you can copy mails from your shared mailbox to your personal mailbox and view/decrypt them from there.

Hi,

thank you for the clarification.

The issue with this workaround is that we would not be able to properly use the private/public key pair created specifically for the shared mailbox to encrypt and decrypt emails sent from or received by that mailbox.

Do you have any roadmap or estimated timeline for supporting direct access to shared mailboxes in GpgOL/web?

Also, do you need any support or testing assistance for the development of this feature?

Decryption of received mails would not be an issue. It does not matter which mailbox you are logged in to in Outlook, as long as you (as the user logged into Windows) have access to the private part of (one of) the key(s) that the message is encrypted to. But yes, any workflow involving sending mails from the shared mailbox will be a problem in the current state.

I’m currently looking into what needs to be done, but cannot give you a timeline, yet. It might be fairly easy or it might not be. Your offer to help in testing is much appreciated, though. I’ll get back to you with more info, soon.

We have a preliminary working version, and would indeed like to get back to you about testing it with your workflow(s). I’ll contact you via PM, once I have looked into a few more details and prepared a testing version (probably by early next week).
